iPod Hi-Fi - Review
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
I've recently invested big chunk of my pay
into something rather SMALL! The title probably gave it away but the iPod Hi-Fi has been something I've always looked at and wish I could own. Not quite something I really want urgently but just wouldnt mind having it if you know how that feels
So after spotting a bargain @ Harris Technology at Cannington. I got myself something which seems to me is small in looks but big in the inside!
If you think that is HUGE.. think again!!
Now that just sits nicely on my desk
To be honest, I am very amazed by the sound it produces. For such a small unit, the clarity is not THE BEST but you will never get distortion at high volume unlike other speakers out there. Ipod Hi-Fi is actually not built to be placed right infront of your face, best sound quality are achieved around 2 - 3m away from the speakers as it gives u a MULTI-SPEAKERS feel. It'd feel as if you have 2 floor stand speakers few meters apart when in reality its only a small boom box infront of you.
Apple has claimed that the iPod Hi-Fi is "Home Stereo,Re-Invented" and claim that it's sound is "Audiophile Quality".
I must say they really got ahead of themselves on that one. Those statement above has landed Apple a lot of critizism. In the process trying to prove apple's statement I did a little test.
I compared the sound produced by … to the iPod Hi-Fi
My trusty KENWOOD amp! Awesome piece of equipement to have..
Good old JAMO floor speakers which delivers exceptional sound.
THE FINAL VERDICT…
I have to say after comparing both of them, iPod Hi-Fi's sound quality is no way as good as the sound produced by the system I have at home. It lacked of the high end clarity that I was lookin for. It did pretty well high up but it was rather painful at high volume, mid-range was ALMOST on par but lack of "doof doof" down low.
HOWEVER do not chuck away or make me stop you from buying one of the pretty looking Hi-Fi BECAUSE… For the size of the iPod Hi-Fi..
Which happily fits in ur room or your desk in your confined room… COMPARED TO..
THIS which takes up a whole living room (Amp, 2x speakers + 1 sub)
The Ipod Hi-Fi definitely has it's advantage. It gives u the big sound without having to have a big room and of course without having to pay big bucks! For one of the system u see above, amp would cost you around 2000 dollars (or more) floor speakers would cost around 1500 for something good and of course the sub would be around 1000 dollar.. All up approx. 4500 - 5000 dollars for some decent sound to go through ur ears.
And guess what, the iPod Hi-Fi wont cost you 5000 dollar but rather you can get one for $500 from any leading retail stores. If you want something smaller and sleeker you can always go for the BOSE iPod dock which would set you back around $450 (I'd still recommend the Hi-Fi.. WHY? ask me :P)
Overall I'd give the iPod Hi-Fi a 8.5 out of 10.
iPod Hi-Fi, Small guy with a big heart
Oh by the way, If anyone is looking for a AS GOOD AS NEW iPod Hi-Fi.. Mine is up for sale.. DONT pay $500 for a new one.. I am lookin for around $399 ONO. Make me an offer that I cannot refuse. I will give you more information if you are interested…
